Before starting to make change, take a look at these healthy eating tips and set up for success! We want our Healthy Eating journey to become a permanent, pleasurable part of our lifestyle. We are going for the marathon here, not the sprint. Not just another fad, or dare I say it ….. diet!
For me, the word ‘diet’ conjures up thoughts of ‘going without’ or ‘going hungry’, stocking the fridge and pantry with the latest and greatest low fat, low salt, low joule products and attempting to live with the constant feeling of being deprived! To top it off, it is food I don’t necessarily want to feed my kids (skim milk, low fat cheese, margarine etc) so I end up buying extra.
That’s right, set to fail right from the start - my head isn’t on straight! Which leads me to the single most important thing you can do to ensure success ...
For me, nothing sums it up better than one of my favourite books – ‘French Women Don’t Get Fat’ by Mireille Guiliano. The secret of Eating for Pleasure – how perfect! So suddenly there is no more ‘going without’ and deprivation. We’re even talking Champagne here – in moderation, of course! :)
While we’re getting our heads straight, it’s a great time to look at what we’re eating, how much, when, how often and where appropriate - why. A food diary is a great tool for this. Guaranteed to highlight bad habits.
Promise yourself to be honest with the food diary – no point wasting time and cheating yourself. Lets face it, it’s for your eyes only, no one else needs to see it (not even your nearest and dearest). Password protect it, if it makes you feel better!
Start reading the ingredient labels on everything you purchase in the supermarket – take notice of what goes into the food you buy. While we’re at it, take a look at the nutritional information table. How much salt, sugar, fat, protein and carbohydrates are present?
Now we’re ready to take a look at my 10 tips to healthy eating. If you need a visual reminder, feel free to print them off and pop them on the fridge.
Awareness of what we are eating, hand in hand with creating a balanced diet and keeping active can have a positive effect on our weight, so next on the list – lets make a list! A list of the actions we will start to take to improve our health and shape. Don’t worry, we’re going to take it really slow and just do one thing at a time. Together like I promised! Eating Healthy to Lose Weight Action List may help you get started.
Finally, remember to keep active! It is a fundamental truth – what goes into our bodies must be burnt off or we gain weight. Exercise also improves our mood and energy levels. Stairs are our friend (I have to keep reminding myself of this!) and can be incorporated into the day easily ...
... You get the idea. With the added bonus of being cost/time free!
